If there ever was an anti-politician politician, I am it. While there certainly are some exceptions, many elected officials go to Washington for reasons other than to do what's best for this country. Some are only interested in making it a career, which was never the intent of the founding fathers. I have already had a career, and my goal now is to represent the people of New Hampshire with integrity and dedication. The future poses significant challenges, and we need decisive leaders in Congress to take them on. The attitude of the current administration, and those before this one, has been to push these problems into the future and let the next generation deal with them. We are faced with hard choices. We make those choices now, or we risk significantly bigger sacrifices in the years ahead. Our exploding debt, which has been fueled by successive years of irrational spending, cannot be sustained forever. Much of it is owned by foreign governments, in particular China and Japan. Is there anyone who really believes that this is a good thing for our country in the long run? My commitment to you is to work tirelessly to solve the major issues of our time. I know it won't be easy. I will be surrounded by many people who are more concerned about protecting their own power and position than they are about making tough decisions. But, if we don't start now, when will we start? |
Career politicians in Washington spend a huge amount of time running for reelection. While they are criss-crossing the state (or country) campaigning and raising money, they are still drawing their government salaries paid by the taxpayers. I have never understood the logic behind this. Why should these people be paid when they are not working? |
